Six Go Mad in Egypt!

Some of the staff and our friends.

Our friend Hesham played classical guitarist from the 1886 restaurant, before leaving for Cairo. A charming man, whose fluid style is such an asset to the ambiance of this luxurious and famous restaurant.  When you hear him play, you cannot believe he was once in a rock band! Go on! Get dressed up in your best bib and tucker and treat yourself to the high life!

I found this on the web "The Old Winter Palace in Luxor is superb! The staff are excellent especially in the 1886 Restaurant where the Maitre d', Mr Ahmad, provides impeccable service. An incomparable atmosphere  - with candle-light; impressive chandeliers; mirrors; silver service and evocative background live music from the incredibly talented guitarist". Since Hesham left, the standard hasn't gone down. I think the latest guy is Radwan, another superb guitarist.

See photos of his visit to England, after marrying Maria.

On the right is Abdu, with his cousin Mamdu from the pool. No one will look after your poolside needs better. They have a smile to die for and nothing seems too much trouble for these super guys. Abdu lives in Karnack and his house has one of the temple gateways immediately outside the front door.... When you live with antiquities, no one seems to think anything of it! Without question, Abdu is my brother. He has a wonderful family, sometimes I think his family is half of Karnack!

Gamal is usually found in the bar by reception. Always showing the customers tricks & puzzles, he is typical of the staff at the Winter Palace, efficient, charming & fun. He is also a teacher in Luxor.

We went to his house one year and you would not believe how fantastic his wife can bake a cake ... once eaten, never forgotten!

Hamdy is one of the real gentlemen of the world. At another time he would be the person who led a great household. Calm, efficient & a real friend. After going on his Hadj (or sacred journey,) one year. It was very touching to hear that he thought of us on his arrival. He turned up one year to see us for tea in another hotel & brought one of his lovely children to see us. Another time he was working in Sharm el Sheikh and he was truly missed.
